2007 obituary. FALMOUTH -- Catherine Marie Dinan, 93, of Falmouth, previously of Portland, in Falmouth, Nov. 17, 2007. She was born on Aug. 29, 1914, in Milton, Mass., the daughter of David W. and Catherine M. (Barry) Scannell. Her parents had each emigrated from County Cork, Ireland. She attended Milton schools and at the age of 16 was the valedictorian of the 1931 graduating class of Milton High School. Catherine then attended the Bryant and Stratton Business School in Boston, graduating in 1933.In July of 1942, she married Edward J. Dinan in Virginia Beach, Va. He predeceased her in 1992. While he served in combat operations in the South Pacific during the Second World War, she was employed by the U.S. Attorney's office in Boston. When her husband returned from the war, they settled in Reading, Mass., and started their family life. They had five sons. In 1962 they moved to Portland. Shortly after, she returned to work as a legal secretary, first for Jacob Agger and then the law firm of Wheeler, Pomeroy and Snitger, until her retirement in 1982. A long-time communicant of St. Pius X, she became a communicant of Holy Martyrs Church in Falmouth when she moved to Falmouth in 1998. Catherine had a deep love for her family. The focus of her life was time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was veryinvolved in their activities. Her belief, support and pride in each of them were remarkable, and treasured by her family. She was a central part of the many visits to Maine by her grandchildren. One of the first grandchildren looked forward to those visits, and would repeatedly ask, When are we going to see Maine again? She came to be called Maine by all her grandchildren. Four of her sons graduated from Cheverus High School, where she was a member of the Mothers Club. Besides her husband, Catherine was predeceased by a sister, Christine Scannell, and a brother, William W. Scannell. Visiting hours will be 4-7 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 23, at the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. Prayers will be recited at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24 at the funeral home, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Martyrs Church, 266 Foreside Rd., Falmouth. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
