Scherf, Opal Obituary Opal Elizabeth Scherf, age 101, of Gaylord, went to be with her Lord on November 23, 2011. Opal was born in Carrol County, MO. to Frank and Iva (Griffith) Uhrig on June 25, 1910, and grew up on the family's farm. Opal was preceded in death by her five brothers, Russell (Sara), Harold (Dorothea), Doyne (Mary Ann), Keith (Audrey) and Burrel, and her two sisters, Helen, and Ruth (Campbell). Opal's husband Robert also preceded her in death. Throughout the years she had many jobs raising her family of four boys, LeRoy (Evelyn), William (Dona), Thomas (Ruby) and Joseph. Opal's later years were spent at Alten Zimmer. She joined the R.S.V.P. and crocheted many, many baby afghans for the O.B. Dept at Otsego Memorial Hospital. She also made weekly reassurance calls and made calls for the Red Cross blood drives. Opal was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. from the First United Methodist Church in Gaylord, Rev. John Naile officiating. Visitation will take place at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in honor of Opal Scherf to the charity of your choice or to Otsego County Bus System, Otsego County Commission on Aging, or the First United Methodist Church through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.
