• Doris Ann Bean 69 of Rupert passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, at Minidoka Memorial Hospital in Rupert.
Doris (Penny) Bean died Monday, March 18, 2013, with friends and family by her side.

Penny was born in Minnesota on Oct. 4, 1943, to Rodney and Hazel Schlegel. She spent her youth in California, Oregon and Alaska, finally settling in Rupert, Idaho, as an adult. Penny's passion in life was her horses and her animals. She had a special gift and seemed to communicate with her animal friends on a level that few could understand. She sought out the peace and serenity of the mountains and spent many years herding sheep in Idaho and Utah. She also enjoyed fishing, canning, cooking and finding homes for stray and abandoned animals.

She is survived by her four children, Debra Rogers, David Hedgers, Jason Bailey and Melody Martin, all of Alaska. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Leona Johnson; brother, Donald Schlegel; several nieces and nephews; her beloved friends of Rupert; and her pet companions, Rascal and Scampi.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 29, at the Durfee Ranch in Albion, followed by a wake at 4 p.m. at Melody's Bar in Rupert.
