She gave her heart to the Lord and was baptized, becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite in Ithaca, Michigan. Her faith was precious to her and she remained faithful to her vows all of her life.
Joan worked at Carson City Hospital in various departments and clinics for many years. During this time she adopted an eight year old girl, Dianne, and later was blessed with a granddaughter Sarah.
Her life changed on May 22, 1983 when she married Frank Barkman of Linden, Alberta. She moved to Canada and accepted Frank’s children as her own. The grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many new friends were special to her.
She enjoyed gardening and their hobby raising llamas until they retired and moved to Linden in 1997. We appreciated her enthusiasm in the many quilting projects she had, and we’ll remember the love that went into each one.
Surviving with fond memories are Dianne and Gary Kelly, Michigan; Ruth and Claude Friesen, Mt. Lehman, BC; Jim and Debbie Barkman, Rick Barkman, Three Hills, AB; Heather Barkman, Wanda Barkman, Linden, AB; her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her brothers, Maynard, Fred and Linda, Bob and Polly, and sister Helen all of Michigan.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Frank, one infant grandson Trevis and her parents.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 11 am at the Mt. Calm Mennonite Church. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10am until the time of services at the church. Interment will be in Hayes Road Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Carson City. Michigan
