Rawleigh W. Schofield, 84, of rural Clay City died at his home on Monday, November 5, 2007 at 1:20 PM.

He was born December 15, 1922 to William Allen & Ida Tipton Schofield in Clay City. On March 14, 1947, he married Marcella Jane Dunahee. They were the parents of Darrell, Bill, Janet, Melody, Teresa, and Angie. Marcella died on March 14, 1981. On December 4, 1982, Rawleigh married Sally Bice and acquired four step-children.

He was a veteran of World War II in the European Theater, in Patton's 3rd Army.

Locally he belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Flora; the Golden Links Sunday School Class; the VFW and American Legion Posts in Clay City. He was a farmer, factory worker and oil field rough neck. He also enjoyed gardening, lawn mowing, and wood working.

Rawleigh is survived by his wife, Sally; sons: Darrell (Debbie) Schofield and Bill (Pam) Schofield both of Clay City; daughters: Teresa Borton and Angela (Carl) Hemrich both of Clay City, Janet (David) Steckenrider of Marion, Melody (Steve) Sowers of Bethany; step-daughters: Becky (Wyatt) Daugherty of Greenup, Miki Babbitt of Allentown, PA; step-sons: David (Kathy) Bice of Winnetka, Kevin (Sheila) Bice of Brandon, WI; one brother: Allen (Maggie) Schofield of Metamora; along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, 3 brothers (Lawrence, Logan & an infant brother), 2 sisters (Ruey Cash & Florence Yockey).

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Thursday, November 8, 2007 at Frank & Bright Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Foster Hill Cemetery, rural Clay City. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Wednesday at Frank & Bright Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Clay County Hospice and may be received at the funeral home.

ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON FEBRUARY 9, 1943 AT CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING AND ATTENDED THE 16 WEEK RADIO OPERATORS SCHOOL, QUALIFYING IN THE MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY (777). DEPARTED THE U.S. ON MAY 21, 1944 BOUND FOR ASSIGNMENT TO HEADQUARTERS DETACHMENT EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS U.S. ARMY (ETOUSA). PARTICIPATED IN THE NORTHERN FRANCE, ARDENNES, RHINELAND AND CENTRAL EUROPE CAMPAIGNS. EARNED THE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 4 BRONZE BATTLE STARS AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL. HONORABLY DISCHARGED FROM THE SIGNAL CORPS AS A TECHNICIAN 5TH GRADE ON DECEMBER 31, 1945 AT THE SEPARATION CENTER, FORT SHERIDAN, ILLINOIS.
