Elizabeth Scott was born near Hazel Green, Grant County, Wisconsin to parents Frederick and Ann (Wheeler) Scott. Lizzie, as the name she went by, was the 1st child born of 10 children, two dying in infancy. Lizzie attended the Plattsville Normal School in Wisconsin. In 1876 the family seeking more land, moved to Modale, Harrison County, Iowa. What prompted the decision to move may have been when a devastating tornado hit Hazel Green on March 10, 1876. Lizzie, now an adult, moved with the family. At their new home in Iowa, Lizzie was teaching school at first at the Riley school about a mile south of home. Next was at the Mill School near California Junction where she met Albert Bessire. On March 8, 1883 in Harrison County, Lizzie and Albert were married. All four of Lizzie and Albert's children were born in Modale, Iowa. In 1897 the family moved to a small community of Appleton, Colorado. This community is on the outskirts of Grand Junction. In Appleton, Lizzie and Albert bought 20 acres of land from Lizzie's younger brother John and started a new farm raising both their family and apples from the newly planted orchards. Sadly two of the children would die as young adults. In time, Lizzie would die from an infection in her gall bladder.
