Woman 33, Fatality In Wreck By Don Lowery Staff Writer
A Bloomingdale woman died shortly after noon Wednesday, less that two hours after being critically injured in a single-car crash on Georgia Highway 204 near Interstate 95, Chatham County Police reported.
The victim was identified as Johnnie Inez Scruggs Babcock, 33, of Rt. 1, Box 365, Bloomingdale, according to county police Cpl. Robert P. Taylor. She died at St. Joseph's Hospital at 12:18 p.m.
The death of Johnnie Inez Scruggs Babcock of Bloomingdale was the 35th traffic fatality in Chatham County this year. As of this time last year, 29 persons had died in traffic accidents here.
Investigators said the crash occurred on the section of Georgia Highway 204 that is under construction by the State Department of Transportation and restricted to through-traffic. Only residents of the area are supposed to use the road and the speed limit for the stretch is 25 m.p.h., police said.
Mrs. Babcock, driving a 1979 MGB convertible, was heading east on the unfinished road at an excessive rate of speed about 10:45 a.m. police said.
She was driving to her job at the Best Western motel at Oasis village at the Interstate 95 interchange.
Investigators said the woman apparently took her eyes off the roadway and her sports car veered into some soft dirt along the right shoulder of the road. The sports car then careened across the highway and flipped twice, throwing the woman from the vehicle, witnesses told police.
Chatham Emergency Medical Service transported the victim to the St. Joseph's Hospital with internal injuries.
She was native of Chatham County.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth and Keith Babcock, both of Bloomingdale; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Scruggs of Bloomingdale; three brothers, Randy, Ronnie and Mark Scruggs, all of Bloomingdale; and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Allie Brown of Orange Springs. Fla.
