Gaffney, S.C. - Sarah Scruggs Benton, 89, of 939 9th Street, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at her residence.
Born in Belton, she was the widow of the late Lee Otis Benton and daughter of the late Henry Corbett Scruggs and Louise Pruitt Scruggs.
Mrs. Benton retired from Cherokee County Disabilities and Special Needs and was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church. Mrs. Benton loved dogs, flowers, and working in her yard.
Surviving are four sons, Mike Benton and special friend, Gail Burgess, of Greer, Keffer Benton and wife, Vicki, Wayne Benton and wife, Ann, and Jerry Lynn Godfrey and wife, Cherie, all of Gaffney; two daughters, Barbara Benton Mullinax and husband, Tommy, of Gaffney and Nancy Benton Rodgers and husband, Bill, of Greenville; eighteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; her special babies, "Lady" and "Tinker".
She was preceded in death by a son, Calvin Benton, a great-grandchild, Steve Foster, a brother, J.B. Byars, and two sisters, Bertie Grantham and Louise Scruggs.
The family would like to extend special thanks to her caregiver/granddaughter, Deana Hill, and to Gentiva Hospice, especially Karen and Carolyn.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 18, 2014 at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Powell and Mr. Ashby Blakely officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery.
