Born and educated in Albany, Mary Anne was the daughter of the late Francis Shea and Margaret (Retter) Shea, and the loving wife of 58 years of the late William J. Balfe Jr.
Mary Anne Shea Balfe graduated from St. Joseph's Academy, Albany and Albany Memorial School of Nursing in 1955.
She worked as a nurse in doctors offices; as an orthopedic nurse at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, Va., and for many years in the emergency department and other departments at Albany Memorial Hospital, where she retired in 2003.
She was a board member of Albany Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, a member of New York State Nurses Association, and Auxiliary and volunteer services at Albany Memorial Hospital.
She was also a past member of the American Nurses Association, Emergency Nurses Association, Hudson Valley Paramedic Advisory Committee, Clinical Ladder Review Board, and American Healthcare Institute.
Mary Anne received the award for VIP of the Year 1993 at Albany Memorial Hospital, and was a recipient of the Harriet Bahn Award for excellence in Nursing.
She was previously associated with PTA activities, Girls Scouts of America and was active in church activities.
She was also accomplished at crocheting.
Mary Anne continued to volunteer at Memorial Hospital until shortly before her passing.
Burial will follow the Mass in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.
