SHELBY, ALBERT LYON, 83, of Louisville, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2007, at Baptist Hospital East. A native of Marion, KY, he graduated from Western Kentucky University after serving his country during World War II, as an Army veteran. Mr. Shelby fought in Europe and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a retired salesman for a Christmas Club, a Corporation and worked for many years as a house painter and handyman. Mr. Shelby loved crossword puzzles, quick wit, a great joke, music of all kinds and his family. Mr. Shelby is survived and loved by his wife of 64 years, the former Marjorie Wright; his children, Penny Shelby, of Cleveland, OH, Melinda Shelby (Scott White), of Atlanta, GA, Don Shelby (Liz), of Pleasureville, KY and Ellen Mattingly (Rick Knapp), of Cleveland; his brother, Evan Shelby (Emily), of Marion, KY; a host of adoring grandchildren, Karen Shelby (Eric Bakovic), of San Diego, CA, Mark Douglas (Kelly) of Indianapolis, IN, Kim Cloer (John), of Statesville, SC, Alan Shelby (Krissy), of Louisville, Paul Cowan (Diana), of Newark, OH, Jason Douglas (Kim), of Portland, OR, Greg Mattingly, of Statesville and Shelby Mattingly of Chicago, IL; and a gaggle of great- grandchildren, including Ashleigh and Sean Cowan, Wyatt Douglas, Matthew Cloer, and Xander, Kelsey and Luke Shelby, all of whom love and will miss their "Gronk". His funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, with cremation to follow. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Highlands. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Louisville Crusade for Children, to the charity of your choice, or through anonymous acts of kindness.
