Sylvia was born in Petit Jean, Arkansas and attended high school and college in Illinois. She met her husband while they were in college and traveled with him extensively during his service in the military during and after WW II. They settled in Normandy Park, Washington in 1955 and were founding members of John Knox Presbyterian.

Sylvia was active in the Republican Party and served as state convention director as well as vice-chairman of the King County party. She also served as a board member and as president of the Highline Community Hospital Foundation.

Her husband and daughter predeceased her. She was survived by two sons and three grandchildren.

Her memorial was held at John Knox Presbyterian.
