Bertha Boyce, 98, died in Liberty on March 26, 2010.

Born Bertha Louise Sheppard in Watkins Glen, NY, on March 8, 1912. The family moved to Richmond, Virginia, when she was a teenager, where she graduated from John Marshall High School. She then returned to New York to attend Meakers Busines Institute in Elmira, New York. She married in 1937 and had four daughters. After her first marriage ended, she married Trevor Boyce in 1946, and they came to Houston. She and Trevor began Trevor Boyce Associates. The company was incorporated in 1959, and they moved to Dayton in 1960. Working side by side, Mr. and Mrs. Boyce built the business, and Mrs. Boyce continued to run it for several years after his death. She retired at the age of 70. Asked once what her hobbies were, she replied, "I didn't have time for hobbies. I worked all my life." However, in addition to her professional work, she worked diligently to make her community a better place for all. She was a worthy matron of Rebecca Lodge of Eastern Star from 1984 to 1985. She was also a member of Pilot Club and helped establish Helping Hands. She was a board member of the Liberty County Project on Aging, and served with the volunteer auxiliary at Liberty-Dayton Hospital. She was a member of the local AARP, and served the Tri-County Mental Health-Mental Retardation in Liberty. She collected toys and food for the Dayton Police Department to distribute, and when she could no longer drive, she organized toy and food drives each year in the Dayton Retirement Center where she lived. When she was unable to serve the various groups to which she belonged in any other way, she could be counted on to make phone calls to the members, reminding them of meetings or giving them important information. She continued serving in that way until her vision became so poor she could not read the phone numbers. She was a member of the Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, and was recognized as Dayton's Citizen of the Year for 2004. She was well-known in the community as someone to whom one could turn for help with any worthwhile project. A lifelong Episcopalian, Mrs. Boyce became a member of St. Stephen's Church shortly after moving to the area, and remained active in the church until her death. She was designated a 2010 Woman of Honor Episcopal Churchwomen of the Diocese of Texas.

In addition to her husband Trevor, Mrs. Boyce was preceded in death by her parents William and Bertha Smith Sheppard, her sister Lillian Sheppard Bosley, and brothers Russell Sheppard and Bruce Sheppard.

Mrs. Boyce is survived by her four daughters and their husbands, Valkyrie and Bob Rose, of Erin, NY; Kirsten and Bill McAdoo, of Lyons, NY; Iola and Bob DiIorio, of Williamsburg, VA; and Dorine and Delbert Woodard of Dundee, NY. In addition she left 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren, her church family and many, many friends and admirers.

Mrs. Boyce's family wishes to thank the personnel at Liberty Health Care Center for the excellent care she received and the congregation of St. Stephen's Church for their love and support over many years. They request that contributions be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Bell Tower Fund, in lieu of flowers.

Visitation will be at Sterling Funeral Home, 6-8 PM on Sunday, March 28. The Rite of Christian Burial will be at St. Stephen's Church on Monday, March 29 at 2:00 PM, with the Rev. Ted Smith presiding. Burial will follow in Palms Memorial Park in Dayton.
