The family came to California in 1863, settling first in El Dorado County (1863-1865). In that same year he bought the drug store in Martinez and later bought a drug store in Berkeley. He became sick and went to Mendocino County, staying for two years before going to San Mateo County, CA. While in San Mateo County he had a stroke which he never recovered from. Returned With A Bride

"Our pleasant young friend George A. Sherman, of the Morgan House, at Martinez, returned last week from a brief visit east, bringing with him one of Ohio's daughter's as a bride.

By reference to the marriage notices it will be seen that George and Miss Fannie, son and daughter of Mrs. Charles Sherman, formerly Sheriff of Delaware County, but now of Martinez, CA have lately taken a matrimonial step. Some eight years ago Mr. Sherman left Delaware with his family for the west, leaving behind a host of friends, among whom one was particularly dear to George, and after an absence of eight long years, his late visit to the county has been rewarded and on the third instant he left for his western home, accompanied by Miss McAdow as his life companion. Miss Fanny's alliance with Mr. Guppy is no doubt a judicious one, and we wish the young couples more than the ordinary blessings of the far west."

According to the Sherman Directories by John H. Sherman, Vol. 2, George and Elnora married on 3 Apr 1872. George is #371, listed on page 949
Children of George and Elnora:
1. Raymond Hough Sherman (#4) born 31 Dec 1872
2. Charles Roland Sherman (#512) born 30 May 1875
3. Lottie Lois Sherman (#10) born 3 Nov 1880
4. Grosvenor Attwood Sherman (#1) born 16 Feb 1883
5. Emily Elnora Sherman (#85) born 26 Jul 1888

Passes Away Wednesday At Berkeley

A Well Known Resident And Former Business Man At Martinez, Contra Costa County

"The news of the death of George A. Berkeley on Wednesday night was a shock to a great number of his old friends in Martinez though it was known that his health had been but poor for a long while.

George Atwood Sherman, the son of Charles and Roxana Sherman was born in Delaware County, Ohio on February 17, 1845. There he received his education and resided until 1863, when he accompanied his parents to California, and resided in El Dorado County until 1865, in the spring of which year the family moved to Contra Costa County and George Sherman finished his education at the Platt School in Benicia. In Jul of 1870 he imbarked in the hotel business in the old Morgan House in Martinez, in which he continued until Jul 1876, when he removed to Oakland. In December of that year he bought from G.A. Laurance the drug business in Martinez, which at the present time is under the direction of Mr. Martin, and with that he combined the agency of Wells Fargo & Co."
