Death of Charles Sherman

"Mr. Charles Sherman, an old and representative citizen of Contra Costa County, died in San Francisco on the 23rd instant, from an injury received by a fall on the deck of a steamer while on his way from the Sandwich Islands to San Francisco. When five days from the city he slipped while walking the deck and seriously strained his kidneys. He was unable to procure proper treatment aboard ship, and after arriving in San Francisco he grew rapidly worse, his injuries finally resulting in death. His remains were conveyed to his home in Martinez and buried here last Sunday. Services were held at the late residence, Dr. Abercrombie, Rector of Grace Church, officiating, and a large concourse of neighbors and friends followed the remains to their last resting place. Mr. Sherman came to California in November, 1863. After remaining a short time in Martinez he went to El Dorado County, where he passed two years. He then returned to Martinez and purchased the Morgan House property, where he remained in business until 1870. For the past three years he was interested in Sherman's Educated Horses (Sherman Circus owned and operated by my gg uncle John Sherman) and traveled a great portion of the time with them. Mr. Sherman was one of our substantial citizens, and the community which he so long lived deeply feels his loss. He leaves a widow and six children, all of the latter being married except one."
