The family relocated to Elgarose "Swedesville," Oregon, from Canada around 1920. Edna was one of ten children and her siblings were, Fritz Sjogren; Stanley Sjogren; Olaf Sjogren; Bernard Sjogren; Edward Sjogren; Andrew Sjogren; Takla Sjogren; Alma Sjogren McAllister Japp; and Elsie Sjogren Long McKercher.

Edna married Milo Ralph Howard on August 31, 1934. They had two children, Dr. James Milo Howard and Judith Ann Howard Winsor.

She and Milo moved to Springfield, Oregon, in 1941, and they raised both Jim and Judy at the family home on 17th Street in Springfield. Milo passed away on February 1, 1971. They had a wonderful marriage.

Edna's early years began in Elgarose, Roseburg, attending Elgarose Elementary and then Melrose and Roseburg High School. Edna and her brother Olaf, were the pupil custodians of the Little Elgarose Grade School. They got up early each morning and walked to the school to pack water for drinking and washing hands, and wood for the wood heating stove. Their meager monthly salary of $4.00 a month was immediately given to their parents to assist in supporting their impoverished family.

While attending school, Edna participated in all sports and basketball was her favorite game. Edna also enjoyed playing the piano and she could "play by ear."

Edna worked for their friends, Tom and Cora Sutton at Sutton's Motel in Springfield for many years. She ended her working career with the Springfield School District.

Edna loved to bowl and she bowled at the Timber Bowl every Friday night for 21 years. She was the "anchor man" of the Sutton Motel team, as she consistently maintained a good, steady average.

Edna attended the Eugene Faith Center and most recently, Eastside Four Square Church in Prineville, Oregon. She loved the Lord and all of her family very much. Edna's home was always open to everyone and she truly loved entertaining friends and family at her home.

For many, many years, her brother, Olaf and his wife, Berneice and her brother, Barney came to her home in Springfield on most weekends where they would play endless games of cards and ate sandwiches and potato salad. Then they would all then attend the Faith Center in Eugene on Sunday mornings, they all loved to hear Pastor Roy Hicks preach.

Edna also spent a great deal of time at the coast in the summer time with her beloved sister, Alma and her husband, J.R. "Mac" McAllister. Edna would go out on Mac's boat every chance she got and they would fish for salmon and her favorite, Ling Cod.

Edna dearly loved all of her brothers and sisters and their children. She looked forward to family potlucks and reunions and holidays so she could see her family and play penny-ante poker and pinochle. She was known to be a "shark" at cards.

During her last several years Edna played cards at the Prineville Senior Center. She loved playing pinochle there with her friends, she so enjoyed the Prineville Senior Center.

Edna passed away of congestive heart failure.

Edna is survived by her son, Jim Howard, of Eugene, Oregon; her daughter, Judy Winsor, of Prineville; grandchildren, Melanie Ann Howard Upward; Brian Keith Howard; Thomas Aaron Winsor; James "Jimmy" M. Howard, Jr.; Paul Allan Winsor; Molly Ruth DeSordi; and many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

We want to thank Dr. Cleveland, Dr. Matheson and Dr. Williams for taking good care of Edna throughout her years in Prineville. Also a special thanks to Chris, Edna's assigned hospice nurse, and all the other nurses and hospice folks, including Gina and Mollie.

Lastly, Edna's family wants to thank Bobbie and Jonathan for taking care of Edna each day while Judy was at work and Molly was at school. We appreciate your tender and loving care of Edna.

A celebration of life will be held at Lane Memorial Gardens, 5300 West 11th Street in Eugene, (541)343-1684, on Saturday, March 4, 2006, beginning at 1 p.m. Viewing will be held from 12:30 p.m. until 1 p.m. on March 4, 2006, and also after the service is complete.

Immediately after the service, Edna's family and close friends plan to meet at the home of Dennis and Jean Sjogren in Melrose for a celebration of her life.

Edna loved her church in Prineville, so anyone wanting to remember Edna, may make a contribution in her name, to the building fund or youth group fund at Eastside Church in Prineville. Edna enjoyed attending church there. She was eager to see the new church building completed before she passed away and was happy that the church was getting a new "home." Speaking of new homes, Edna's in a new and better home. We miss you, Edna but you're now able to sing and praise and walk and talk and laugh and love and live again! Hallelujah.
