George V. Smith, 80, of Red Bank, New Jersey, a native Staten Islander and a retired accountant, died yesterday at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank.

Born in New Brighton, he moved to Dongan Hills in 1951. He moved to Absecon, New Jersey in 1988, before settling in Red Bank in 1995.

Mr. Smith had worked as an accountant from 1947 to 1977 at Robert Hall Clothing, Manhattan. From 1977 to 1978, he was employed as an accountant at Rainbow clothing stores, Brooklyn. He was the owner of Dongan Hills Liquors from 1978 to 1980 and worked in Fort Wadsworth as a civilian accountant at the Department of the Navy, from 1981 until his retirement in 1985.

A 1938 graduate of Curtis High School, he earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from St. John's University in 1949.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Smith served as a private in the Army from 1941 to 1945. While stationed in England he met his wife, the former Doris Walsh.

He was a member of the Huttner-Pasqualini Post, American Legion, Dongan Hills, for more than fifty years.

Mr. Smith was a former parishioner of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills, where he was also a member of its Fathers Club and Holy Name Society.

An avid reader, he enjoyed golfing. According to his family, he was also a handyman, repairing household items.

In addition to his wife of fifty-six years, surviving are his daughters, Lynn Carlisle, Sharon Flower, Janet Sofia, and Robyn DeMarco; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held on Saturday from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Ann's Church.
Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
