Joyce was born to Charlotte and Claude Smith on June 2, 1916 in Cottonwood SD.
She graduated from Northern State Teachers College where she met the love of her life Orville Hendrickson. They married on October 27, 1942 in San Antonio, TX before Orville was shipped overseas. In Orville's absence, Joyce taught school in Ruthton, MN. On his return, they settled in Minneapolis. Joyce became a full-time mother with the births of Gary and Al. She functioned as den mother, Sunday school teacher, peace keeper, room mother, judge/jury, team mother, and life guard. Later, Joyce taught at Minneapolis Business College. Joyce's social life was active. She was grateful for evenings away from a houseful of boys. Joyce was involved in DAR, Daughters of the Nile, Eastern Star, ROAL, and Zurah Ladies. She served as an officer many times and remained active as long as her health permitted. Joyce was active at Edgewater Methodist Church for years. When Orville died in 1992, Joyce found Ken Knudsen. Joyce and Ken spent summers in Crescent City, CA and winters in Mesa, AZ.
Following Ken's death, Joyce moved to Phoenix where she lived until her death on January 19, 2005. A friend described Joyce as a true lady: kind, loving, generous, and devoted. At the same time, she was proud and strong willed.
Joyce is survived by son Gary, his wife Susan and son Scott of Arcata, CA and daughter Marne of San Francisco; son Al and his children Alyson and Tyler of Phoenix, AZ and Tonia of Albuquerque, NM; loving nieces and nephews; and a host of loving friends.
