She was the beloved wife of 40 years of William D. Richter; loving mother of Billy Richter and his former wife, Stephanie; cherished grandmother of Nicholas and Matthew Richter; dear daughter of Thomas Smith and the late Kathryn, and dear sister of Thomas Smith.
Janice grew up in Oakwood Heights, S.I., and graduated from PS 50 and New Dorp High School, and attended Staten Island Community College, where she founded the International Club.
She loved to sing, and sang with the All-City Chorus. She attended Vanderbilt Avenue Moravian Church and was a member of the Moravian Choir in Stapleton for 20 years.
More recently, she was a member of the United Church of Christ at The Villages in Florida for three years. As quoted by her husband, "She was a very sweet, gentle and loving woman."
The wake will be at Matthew Funeral Home, on Monday, Jan. 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Service will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 10 a.m. with interment to follow at Ocean View Cemetery.
