Dorothy A. Campbell, 87, of Gettysburg, PA, a former Staten Island resident and a retired administrative assistant and church choir singer, died Tuesday at Lutheran Social Services Nursing Home in Gettysburg. She had resided there since 1999.

The former Dorothy A. Smith was born in Manhattan in 1913. She was brought to Silver Lake with her family when she was two years old and remained on Staten Island for seventy-three years, later moving to the communities of Westerleigh and St. George. Mrs. Campbell relocated to Rossmoor Village, a senior residence located in Jamesburg, NJ in 1988.

She was a graduate of Curtis High School.

Mrs. Campbell was an administrative assistant for the Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities, Willowbrook, from 1964 to 1978, when she retired. Prior to that, she was a secretary for Christ Episcopal Church, New Brighton, for thirteen years.

With her husband, Robert T., a retired Army lieutenant colonel, Mrs. Campbell attended many social events given by the Reserve Officers Association, a professional military group representing the officers of the seven U.S. uniformed services.

She was also an accomplished singer, performing with the Christ Church choir for forty years and with three other musical choirs while she was living in New Jersey.

She loved music and especially enjoyed singing sacred songs and playing the chimes and carillon.

Mrs. Campbell was a former parishioner of Christ Church, St. George's Episcopal Church, Helmetta, NJ, and was a member of Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, Gettysburg.

"She was a loving and kind Christian woman," said her daughter, Nancy Forgang.

Mrs. Campbell's husband, Robert, died in 1978.
Surviving, in addition to her daughter, Nancy, are her son, Bradford; a brother, Robert Avery Smith; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be held tomorrow from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Christ Church.
Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
