Laurie Aird, 52, passed peacefully from this life November 8, 2003, as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage.
There was little pain and the passing was quick. Laurie lived her life as a teacher who taught by example. The second of four daughters, Laurie was born on July 7, 1951, a daughter of J. Keith and Ila Dee Smith. Laurie graduated Suma Cum Laud from the University of Utah with a BA in Psychology specializing in reading disabilities. She married Richard L. Aird on August 8, 1975, in the Salt Lake Temple. With the birth of her first child, Laurie interrupted her formal teaching career to raise five children. Quietly and effectively her example inspired them to love and to be loved. She enjoyed reading, and read to her family at home and on family trips. As a wonderful partner to her husband, she shared in many wonderful adventures. Her faithfulness and dedication to her family inspired all who know her. She is the heart and soul of her family. Her untimely passing leaves a void that cannot be filled.
While a teacher at Woodland Hills School, she helped her students overcome individual obstacles and learn to succeed. She found joy in helping those whose lives had seen difficulties and were in need of a special touch.
Laurie had a profound conviction of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which was manifest throughout her life. She held many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; principally, she was first and foremost a teacher. Serving in other capacities she was the PTA President of the Bella Vista Elementary School. For almost 20 years she worked in the Boy Scouts of America; first as a Den Mother, then in other assignments including Wood Badge staff member and District and Council staff and trainer.
Her Scouting experience included recognition with the Great Salt Lake Council Silver Beaver Award [2003], District Award of Merit, and many other awards and recognitions.
The legacy she leaves is evident in the lives of those she served and is illustrated by her sons, who all earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
She is survived by her husband Richard Aird, children David (Becki), Steven (Amy), Robert, Jeffrey, Juli Anne, mother Ila Dee Smith and sisters Leslie Smith, Linda Odgen, (Tom), Lisa Haymond (Dave).
Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, November 13, in the Salt Lake Cottonwood Heights Fifth Ward, 7075 South 2245 East, Salt Lake City, UT, where friends may visit from 10-11:45 a.m. A viewing will also be held Wednesday, November 12, at Mountain View Memorial, 3115 East Bengal (7800 South) from 6:30-9 p.m.
