HUDSON, S.D. - Hazel Burke, 88, of rural Hudson died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at her residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hawarden, Iowa, with the Rev. LeRoy Seuntjens officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation will be today until 5 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the church.

Mrs. Burke was born Nov. 14, 1911, in Hudson, the daughter of Roy and Belle (Minor) Smith. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1929, and later from Northern State Teachers College. She taught for many years in rural Virginia schools and finished her teaching career at rural Blanchard near Hudson. She married Clifford Burke on June 25, 1938, in Hawarden. They farmed between Hawarden and Hudson. He died Oct. 19, 1984.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Mary's Guild. She enjoyed canning, flower gardens, reading and doing crossword puzzles.

Survivors include two sons, James and his wife, Deloris of South Sioux City, and John Burke of Hudson; a brother and his wife, Rex and Fran Smith of Hudson; a sister, Irma Adams of Hawarden; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a son, Michael in 1980; an infant daughter, Mary; and a brother, Harold Smith.
