Ila Sanderson, age 97, passed away at the Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa on Friday, November 1, 2013.


Ila was born at Winfred, South Dakota on September 26, 1916, the daughter of John H. Smith and Ida Smith (Taylor). She moved to the Ireton area with her parents in 1932 and graduated from Ireton High School in 1934. She obtained her teaching credential and taught at the rural school 2 miles north of Ireton for several years. Ila married Harvey Boison in August 1939 and kept the records for his trucking business. She later worked as bookkeeper for the Ireton Cooperative Lumber Yard and for the Jake Sinkey Garage. Her final working years were at the Ireton Bank. Following Harvey's death in 1982 she spent her winters in Mesa, Arizona where she met and married Silvanus 'Sandy' Sanderson in 1990. Silvanus passed away in 1994. Ila continued to winter in Mesa until 2010 when she was no longer able to drive to Mesa by herself. Ila was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church in Ireton for more than fifty years. In her retirement years Ila enjoyed traveling, bus tours, and cruises.

She is survived by her brother Taylor Smith and his wife Katie of San Bernardino, California; sister-in-laws, Lois Meether and Neva Kircher, both of Hawarden, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ida Smith; brother, Harold Smith and his wife Marion; two brother-in laws; and three sister-in-laws.
