Mrs. Phoebe A. Finley, for many years a resident of Hawarden, passed away at her home in Sioux City at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, following an illness of long duration. The remains will be brought to Hawarden Friday and funeral services will be conducted at the Congregational church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. Wm. F. Vance, pastor of the Associated Churches. Interment will be made in Grace Hill cemetery beside the grave of her husband.

Phoebe A. Smith was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, June 3, 1855, so had attained the age of 66 years, 4 months and 2 days. Her girlhood was spent in Ohio and on Sept. 4, 1873, she was united in marriage there with Webster Finley. They came west in 1880 and located in this vicinity that year. Her husband died about 1904. She continued to make her home in Hawarden for n number of years following his death but moved to Sioux City about ten years ago where some of her children had located. She was the mother of nine children, six of whom preceded her in death. Those who survive are Miss Minnie Finley, Ernest Finley and Mrs. Myrtle Warfield, nil of Sioux City. She is also survived by two brothers and one sister, Lewis Smith and Mrs. A. M. Mc Daniel of Hawarden, and Alva Smith of Burke, S.D.

Mrs. Finley was a woman of true Christian spirit and fortitude. While, at times her pathway seemed hard and her burdens great, she bore her afflictions bravely, her dauntless faith in Him who doeth all things well enabling her to press on with a certain knowledge that her reward would come in life everlasting. The Independent extends sincerest sympathy to the bereaved family, relatives and friends in their dark hour.
