Bernie was born on September 27, 1928, to Harold and Lula ( Nelson) Smith in Hawarden. Bernie graduated from Hawarden High School in 1947. Bernie married his high school sweetheart Sheila Ann Hedden on July 10, 1948, and lived his entire life in the same house he was born in.
At the age of 20, Bernie joined his father in managing Smith Electric, Plumbing & Heating, to which he devoted his entire working life. Bernie reached the pinnacle of his professional achievements after 33 years as county supervisor, the longest running supervisor in Iowa's history. After eight consecutive elections Bernie retired at the age of 76, at which time he received numerous accolades for his public service. One fellow supervisor said that he not only learned a lot from Bernie, but that he was one of the most interesting people I've ever met. While insisting on sound fiscal policy, Bernie was also known for his humor during board meetings. He was a member of the Hawarden Volunteer Fire Department. Above all else, Bernie's life was one of devotion to his family and wife of 63 years.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife Sheila; three daughters, Dianna (David) Kemper of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Genise (Greg) Vreeman of Ireton, Iowa, Theresa (Craig) Rodgers of Indianola, Iowa; two sons, Don Smith of Cave Junction, Oregon, Bob (Bonnie) Smith of Hawarden; eleven grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Lundeen of Alcester, South Dakota.
Bernie was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Smith, and sister, Beverley Holmdal.
