Elmore, IL - Karla May Smith Benson Crouse, 29, of Newry, SC, formerly of Elmore, died at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, in Seneca, SC.

She was born Sept. 27, 1979, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Mahlon D. Smith and Karol May Flickinger Smith.

She is survived by her parents, Karol (Tom) Smith of Galesburg and Mahlon (Marty) Smith of Dahinda, Ill.; two sons, Tyler and Logan Benson; her common law husband, Brian Crouse of Newry, S.C.; one brother, Derek Smith of Wataga, Ill.; one niece, Emma Smith of Oneida, Ill.; her maternal grandmother, May O. Flickinger of Williamsfield; and her paternal grandparents, Dean and Marge Smith of Dahinda.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Charles E. Flickinger; and a daughter, Karma May Crouse.

She attended Lincoln Elementary School in Fort Madison, Iowa, and later attended ROWVA High School.

She began working when she was 15 as a dishwasher and later assumed the title and duties of head cook at Jimmy's in Wataga. She worked for Royal Cleaning and OSF Saint Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

While living in Wataga, she attended Bethel Baptist Church.

She also worked for the Double Take Bar & Grill in Williamsfield before moving to South Carolina. In South Carolina she worked at numerous schools in the cafeteria as head cook. Her last employer was Oconee Medical Center in Seneca, S.C., where she worked as an environmental services supervisor.

She was a devoted, dedicated and loving mother to her boys. They were her pride and joy and her whole life.

She enjoyed spending quality, loving time with not only her sons, but also with friends and family. She collected pandas as her hobby. All her activities were centered around her family.

Burial will be in Williamsfield Cemetery.
