BARNES RITES HERE AND AT HERMON
MONMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Allena Barnes, mother of V.L. and R.J. Barnes of Monmouth, who passed away Wednesday morning, were held at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Holliday-McKnight Funeral Home, in charge of the Rev. F.W. Leonard, pastor of the First Christian Church.
At 2:30 o'clock services were held from the Christian church at Hermon, in charge of Rev. K.C. Ventress of Galesburg, a former pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Leonard. Mr. A. Jones and Mrs. Edith Johnson sang with Mrs. Gertrude Steele at the piano at the Hermon services while Mrs. Frank McCray played organ selections at the funeral home.
Interment was made beside the body of her husband in the Hermon cemetery and pallbearers were Frank Bennett, Halsey Norris, Charles Thomas, Herbert Shennfield, Robert Burford and Emmett Robinson.
Emma Allena Barnes was the daughter of John F. and Mary Smith, and was born near Hermon, Ill. Feb. 14, 1873. On March 11, 1893, she married Oliver M. Barnes and continued to make her home in Hermon until his death in 1924. She also was preceded in death by a son, Oliver Jr.
Following her husband's death, Mrs. Barnes enrolled in Eureka college to complete work on her Bachelor's degree. Later she taught at Southern Christian Institute at Edwards, Miss. She gave up her work several months ago because of failing health.
