Elizabeth Smith Hale was born February 28, 1823 in Gallia Co. Ohio. She was the daughter of Solomon (born 1786 in Maryland) & Catherine Hartsook Smith who married January 4, 1812 in Augustus Co. Virginia. Following the death of Catherine's father William in 1817 several members of the Hartsook family moved to Gallia Co. Ohio. Little is known of the Smith family origins, but a man in his 80's is living in Solomon's household in the 1840 Gallia Co. census who is likely Elizabeth's grandfather. Elizabeth had 3 sisters: Sarah Burlile, Mary M. Rupe, & Christina. She had at least 3 brothers, but the only one known is George W. Smith. Elizabeth married Vinton Hale August 13, 1844 in Gallia Co. Ohio. They became the parents of 11 children: Elva, Marquis, Solomon, Sarah, John Riley, George, William, Marshall, Peter Frank, Martha, & Nathan Harvey. About 1846 the entire Hale family moved to Wapello Co. Iowa. Elizabeth's sister, Mary Rupe, also moved there. After a couple of years Vinton & Elizabeth moved to Knox Co. Illinois where her brother George W. Smith & sister Christina were living. Vinton & Elizabeth also raised 2 granddaughters, Jessie & Viola Gee, following their daughter Elva's death.
