AIKEN, SC -- Norman Charles Smith, Sr., 81, husband of the late Peggy Ann Creutzburg Smith, died Monday, March 7, 2011 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Mr. Smith lived most of his life in Hunterdon County, NJ. He was a son of the late Joseph and Ada Mae McMurtry Smith. Norman attended Cornell University and worked for 35 years as a pilot for Eastern Airlines, and was a member of Eastern's Safety Committee. During his career, he was involved in recovery efforts in several airline disasters. He was a member of the Retired Airline Pilots Association. He retired to Aiken in 1986 and became involved in the local horse community. He was a member of Palmetto Golf Club. Norman was an antique car hobbyist and was a member of the Model A Club.
Survivors include his son, Charlie Smith, Aiken, his daughter, Anne Smith (Gerard) Polakowski, Aiken, four grandchildren; Shelby Smith, Austin Smith, Hannah Polakowski and Luke Polakowski and a sister, Mae Herzog, Pottersville, NJ.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held in the Moravian Cemetery in Staten Island, NY.
