Gerald Wickliffe Smith, age 89, died September 5, 2008.

He was born March 14, 1919 to L. Wickliffe Smith and Blanche Rogers. Gerald was born in Snowflake, Arizona and he grew up in Globe, Arizona. He attended college at Utah State University and University of Arizona. As a World War II veteran, he served in the South Pacific with the US Navy from 1942 to 1945. Later, Gerald met Dorothy Veenendaal in the Navy in San Diego. They were soon married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1945. They lived in Globe, Arizona for many years before moving to Salt Lake City. In both areas he worked as a dairyman. He served an LDS mission in the North Central States mission mostly within the State of Minnesota before going into the Navy. He was very active in the LDS Church in Arizona and in the Salt Lake City Area (Pioneer Stake). He has served many years as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple. He was a life member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers organization.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister (Inez), brother (Glen) and by three of his children (Geraldine, Ruth, Jane Alice). Gerald is survived by his wife Dorothy, son Gerald (Linda), son John (Diane), daughter Nancy (Fred), daughter Nellie (Jimmy), sister Myreel, brother Melvin, brother Norman (Mavis), and sister-in-law Joy Smith. He has 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Friday, September 12, 2008 from 6-8 p.m. at the Deseret Memorial Mortuary (36 East 700 South) in Salt Lake City, Utah. Funeral services will be held at the Riverton 10th Ward Chapel (12830 South 2700 West) Riverton, Utah on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 1 p.m. with a viewing at noon.
Interment will be held on Monday, September 15, 2008 at 9 a.m. at the Utah Veteran's Memorial Park near Camp Williams in Bluffdale, Utah.
