Melvin Benton Smith was born at Leipsic, Ohio on April 10, 1858 and from there moved to Reasnor, Iowa, with his family when a lad of 12, and there grew to manhood.

As a youth of 20 he taught schools in that section and on December 2, 1880 married one of his former pupils, Miss Emma Elizabeth Woods at Hixon Grove Chapel in the vicinity of Newton, Iowa.

A few years after they settled at Holstein, Iowa where three children were born, Delbert who died in infancy, Zella and Zoe and when the latter was one year old moved to a farm 7 miles south of Rock valley in the year of 1885 where two more children came into the family, Pearl, Jesse and Cecil.

In 1890 the family moved into Rock Valley where Mr. Smith engaged in the hardware business.

He was a member of the first school board of which he was the only remaining member. he was city assessor, manager of the Hunting elevator.

In 1900 the Smith family moved to a farm east of Rock Valley where they lived until 1919 and then moved into their present home in Rock Valley.

Mr. Smith served as Supervisor of Sioux County on the Democratic ticket for 14 years.

He has been interested in the world making in history at present and made his daily walks downtown to exchange news with the men about town up until a week before his demise.

On Tuesday Mr. Smith became much weaker and grew gradually weaker until the end came.

Mr. Smith united with the Methodist Church March 26, 1893 of which he maintained his membersnip.

Mr. Smith had attained the age of 84 years, 10 months and 2 days at the time of his passing on February 11, 1943 at 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon.

He leaves to mourn his passing, Mrs. Peter Van Horsen (Zella), Bingham Lake, Minn.; Miss Zoe Smith of Rock Valley, Jesse and Cecil Smith of Rock Valley, four grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith passed away October 28, 1929 and his daughter Pearl also preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 at the family home and 2:00 o’clock at the Methodist Church with Rev." L.A. Rachuy officiating. Interment was made in the family plot in Valley View cemetery on Saturday afternoon.

Relatives from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Peter Van Horsen, Bingham Lake, Minn. The family have the sympathy of friends and neighbors in the death of their father.
