Former Phillipsburg area resident, Edith M. Guthrie, of Wichita, passed away June 23, 2002, at the via Christi Medical Center in Wichita at the age of 81.
Edith was born September 11, 1920, in Osborne County to Claude J. and Elsie Fern Newbrey Sparks.
Edith worked as a nurses aide in the Long Term Care Unit of the Phillips County Hospital. She was a member of West Heights United Methodist Church in Wichita.
Edith was united in marriage to James W. Guthrie on July 23, 1942. To this union six children were born: Ramona, Jim, Barbara, Mary, Kay, and Ed. The couple were later divorced.
Edith was then united in married to Laurence Faubion on September 2, 1979. Lawrence passed away December 25, 1985. She married Orville Foss February 14, 1993. They later divorced.
Survivors include two sons: Jim and wife Willene of Cheney and Ed of Wichita; four daughters: Ramona Shively and Jack, Barbara Davis and husband Mel, and Mary Craig and husband Richie, all of Wichita and Kathy Guthrie of Golden, Colorado; one sister, Opal Spicer of Glade, sister-in-law Johnnie Sparks of Seattle Washington, 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Lawrence, five brothers: Carl, Ralph, Ray, Jack and Glenn, and one sister, Russum Buttermore.
Edith loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services were held June 26 at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with Rev. Richard Zimmerman officiating.
Casket bearers were Rick and Telly Craig, Curry Black, Brad Gaines, Tim, John, Steve and Mark Shively, Brent Guthrie, Bobby Layne and Andrew Luckert.
Interment was in the Kirwin Cemetery in Phillips County, KS.

Isaac Harlan Guthrie, son of James C. and Margaret A. Tedrick Guthrie, was born July 16, 1870, in Akron, Ohio. He came with his parents to Kirwin, Kansas, in 1888, and except for two years when working on the railroad at Lincoln, Nebraska, he spent the remainder of his life in that community.
He was united in marriage to Barbara Ellen Deuel on January 10, 1893. She was the daughter of George D. and Caroline M. Graham Deuel, and she was born August 27, 1873, at Kirwin. Harl, as he was known, and his wife made their home and engaged in farming in the Kirwin vicinity.
In the fall of 1938 they moved to Kirwin because of her failing health. She preceded him in death on July 20, 1940. He and a son Walter continued to make their home in and near Kirwin until Walter went into service in September 1942. Harl lived alone then until December 1947 when, because of failing health, he went to his son, Walter's home. Since April 1948, except for two months, he made his home with his daughter Lela and her husband. He passed away February 17, 1950, at Kirwin and was buried in the Kirwin Cemetery.
