Died at her residence near Pilot Knob, Ind., Lydia Bowman, born May 11, 1796 died Feb. 15, 1886, aged 89 yrs., 9 mos. and 6 days.
She was born in Mercer Co., Va., removed from there with her parents when quite young to Bulliet Co., Ky., and from there to Crawford Co., in 1815. Her maiden name was Springer, and she married James Bowman Jan. 6, 1817. This proved to be a happy union until the grim messenger of death summoned her husband from his earthly toil some 13 years ago.
Grandma Bowman by which name she was known for miles around was greatly beloved by all her neighbors. She was an amiable companion, an indulgent mother and a zealous Christian not in theory alone but in practice. She united with the M.E. Church about 40 years ago and remained a faithful member until her death.
Quite a number of the aged ministers that visited Mt. Zion Church in years gone by, will remember being entertained by Grandma's hospitality. Her house was ever the home of the minister. Thus her death takes from our midst, a loved friend made dear to us by many kind deeds and words which marked her long and useful life for which she has gone to reap the rich rewards of the just.
She was the mother of 13 children 6 of whom are living, and 56 grandchildren and 95 great-grandchildren. She leaves these and a large circle of friends to mourn their loss. May they find consolation in the fact that their loss is Grandma's gain.
And may God help them all to so live that they may be happily reunited with their loved ones beyond the cold river of death in that fair and beautiful land of the rightous, where sorrow and death can never enter...
