EDNA CHALKS UP 102

EDNA Stacey Anderson isn't as quick on her feet as she used to be, but no one's holding that against the 102-year-old.

Her family and friends think she's amazing and were happy to tell her on Monday when they gathered at the Kyogle Hospital Aged Care unit to help her celebrate her birthday.
Not only is she still mobile, but the former Wiangaree Sunday School teacher plays bingo and cards and likes nothing more than to have a chat over a cup of tea.

Aged Care Unit activities officer Jacqui Stewart went as far as to call Mrs Anderson an "inspiration".

Born in England, Mrs Anderson travelled to Australia with her parents Ben and Jessie Stacey when she was just 10 months.

She met the love of her life, husband Fred, when at 17 she went to work at the bakery at Wiangaree.

Fred worked at the Wiangaree Sawmill and the couple "courted" for four or five years before marrying.

The young couple settled in Wiangaree, raising their four children - Doug, Delma, Graeme and Gwenda - there and staying on when Fred retired after more than 50 years in the sawmill.

Mrs Anderson moved out of her much-loved Wiangaree home only four years ago.

As for the secret to her longevity, Mrs Anderson said there wasn't one.

She said she's simply an ordinary woman who never smoked or drank alcohol and worked hard all her life.

Special note from Betty Lang Walker #47101893: Edna was the grandmother of my son-in-law, David.
