Sarah E. Barrentine, 100, formerly of Green Acres Mobile Home Park and mother of Bettye Hooker of 397 Seneca Rd, passed away late Sun evening (Nov. 26, 2006) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell.

She was the daughter of the late Walter and Alee Finley Stacey and was born in Montgomery, AL, Jan. 29, 1906, on the family farm, where her father raised cotton and raced horses.

Sarah was married to Joseph Barrentine after he returned from World War I.

He worked for the FL East Coast Railroad, where he was instrumental in building the railroad system in and around Miami, as well as the overseas railroad into Key West. He predeceased her in 1940.

Besides her parents and husband, she also was predeceased by her daughter, Dorys Brooks; her son, Stacey Barrentine; and her sister and five brothers.

She graduated from the Exclusive Alabama School for Girls and later received her nursing degree from the University of Alabama. Sarah was employed as a nurse all her life and owned a small nursing home in her younger years.

After her husband's death, she managed to raise her three children and lived on her own well into her 90s in Dothan, AL, before moving to Hornell seven years ago to be closer to her daughter.

She loved to travel, going from the CA coast to FL and NY spending time with her extended family. Sarah enjoyed doing hand work and received great pleasure sharing items she made with others. She will be remembered for her green thumb and the beautiful gardens and flowers that she grew.

Her family includes her daughter, Bettye Hooker of North Hornell; her eight grandchildren; 14 g-grandchildren; and five g-g-grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 2-3 pm Thurs, Nov. 30, at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral and committal service will take place following calling hours at 3 pm Thurs, with the Rev. David Kilgore officiating. Interment will be in the Arkport Cemetery.
