Her parents were both 29 years old when she was born. He worked in a garage, and she was a housewife.

Mrs. Akers was a graduate of North Texas State Teachers College (University of North Texas), Denton, Denton County, Texas, where she received her B.S. degree, and taught school in El Paso in 1943. The past two years, she was employed as home economics teacher in Midland High School.

The couple honeymooned in Louisiana. For "something old," the bride carried a white linen handkerchief, which was her grandmother's wedding handkerchief. A reception honoring the couple was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Porter, grandparents of the bride.

On 28 Jan 1943, she received her Teachers Permanent Special Certificate from the Texas Department of Education to teach Domestic Science - Domestic Art, authorizing her to contract to teach Home Economics in any public school in the State of Texas for life.

She died of metastatic breast cancer at Kaiser Santa Teresa Hospital in San Jose, Santa Clarita County, California. At that time, it was noted she was divorced (1980), had a master's degree, and was a coordinator of volunteers for a charitable organization, at the age of 83.
