Amanda was the daughter of Alfred and Louisa Stuart Church. After her father's death during the Civil War and her mother's death a few years later, Amanda and her younger sister, Mollie, went to live with Linsey and Elizabeth Wheeler and their children near Pisgah, Alabama. Amanda married John Stoner on 11 July 1878, and they had seven children: Arthur, Edna Erle, Florence, John, Ethel, Luberta, and David.
