Maria was married to Day Yi Cheng and was widowed for almost half a century.
She single0handedly brought up four sons and one daughter through two wars, the Sino-Japanese War and the 1949 Communist Revolution. She instilled the value of education in all of her children and grandchildren. All of them achieved academic excellence in earning bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, Ph. D.'s and M. D.'s. She herself was a graduate of the first class at a women's normal school in her native province of Chekiang, China. She was a preceded in death by two sons, Shi-Young and Sherman Cheng.
She is survived by two loving sons, Sheldon (wife Jean) of Bethesda, Md., Paul (wife Eileen) of Potomac, Md., and Sherman's wife, Mary, of Arizona. Her grieving daughter is Tina Cheng Fu and son-in-law Sherwin S. Fu. She will be much missed by her grandchildren (seven granddaughters and one grandson) and two great-grandchildren.
Maria was a devout Catholic for more than 40 years and attended St. Peter Catholic Church since her arrival in Oshkosh in 1983. She made many friends through the Aquinas Club and enjoyed saying rosaries. her wish to be buried beside her son, Sherman, in Opelika, Ala., will be respected.
A memorial Mass will be conducted by her favorite priest, Father John Becker, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, in St. Peter Church.
