Sister M. Camilla Sweeney, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, May 9, 1941 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.


She was born on April 7, 1868 in Choconut Valley, Pennsylvania, and given the name Winifred. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Anna Marie Murphy Sweeney. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 9, 1889, received the religious habit on April 8, 1890, and made profession of her vows on May 24, 1892.


Sister Camilla enjoyed her years of teaching at our IHM mission schools, including at St. Basil Academy in Dushore, PA, where she also served as superior.


She was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, John, Patrick and Daniel, and three sisters, Ellen McInerney, Mary Tierney and Anna McInerney.


She is survived by nieces and nephews.


The funeral was on Monday, May 12 at St. Agnes Place, Elmhurst, with interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery.

"Sister M. Camilla Sweeney, a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, for fifty-one years, died Friday morning in St. Joseph's Hospital, Carbondale. Sister Camilla was well known in this community, serving as a teacher in St. Basil's School for over forty years. She left Dushore in 1935. Funeral services were held Monday from St. Agnes' Place, Elmhurst. A Solemn High Mass of Requiem was celebrated in St. Eulalia's Church, Elmhurst, by Rev. Joseph M. McGowan. Other officers of the Mass were: Rev. James O'Hara, deacon; Rev. John J. Walsh, subdeacon; Rev. Thomas J. McHugh, master of ceremonies. Rev. Edward J. McGuire preached the sermon. Interment was in the sisters' plot in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. The casket bearers were: James, Joseph, George, and Aloysius Sweeney, James McInerney, and Joseph Tierney, nephews of Sister Camilla."
