Sister Maria Edmund Sweeney, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Wednesday, March 22, 1989, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on July 12, 1908 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Patricia. She was the daughter of the late William and Margaret Maher Sweeney. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1925, received the religious habit on December 28, 1925, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1927.

Sister Maria Edmund served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick High School in Scranton, PA; St. Paul High School in Scranton, PA; St. Ann High School in Scranton, PA; St. John High School in Susquehanna, PA; St. Cecilia School in Exeter, PA; St. Rose High School in Carbondale, PA; Bishop Klonowski High School in Scranton, PA; St. Mary of the Mount School in Pittsburgh, PA; as well as at IHM schools located in New York and Goldsboro, NC. She was also a part of a tri-community exchange program, teaching French at Bishop Gallagher High School in Detroit, Michigan.

Sister Maria Edmund's most recent assignment was at Bishop O'Hara High School in Dunmore, PA, where she served as a library assistant.

From 1988 until the time of her death, Sister Maria Edmund served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/French from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in English from Villanova University. She did further study at the Berlitz School of Foreign Language in New York, and also completed a theology program at Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, John J., Edmund and William Francis, Jr.; and three sisters, Eileen Kiley, Vera Mary Schall and Rita Burke.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Friday, March 24 at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel, with interment to follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday afternoon after 2:00 p.m.
