Civil War Union Army Officer. Served as Colonel and commander of the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves, 42nd Infantry Regiment, (the 1st Pa. Rifles) "Bucktails". Killed attacking the Wheatfield on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. There is a marker at the edge of the Wheatfield at the spot where he fell.
