Bertha moved to Alexandria to live with her grandmother Lavenia Wirsherp White, and helped with farming chores until she had two children, Jimmie Lee Pugh and Rose Marie Brown, then moved away to Houston, TX in the early 1930s.
Bertha worked at Spillan's Cafe in Houston for a while then moved to Los Angeles, CA in the late 1930s. She was a strong single parent who worked as a home health care worker while raising her two children. She met and married Aljorine Montague of Oklahome, in Los Angeles, CA in the early 1940s. Bertha and Al worked and enjoyed their lives together until her death in 1968.
