World War I British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Rifleman, in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Queen Alexandra's Own Gurkha Rifles, Indian Army. On September 25, 1915, his unit was in action against German forces at South Manquisart, France. While assaulting the German trenches Rifleman Thapa was wounded and was in retreat when he found a badly wounded British officer behind the first line German trench. Even though the officer urged him to save himself, he remained with him all day and night. In the early morning of September 26, he brought the officer and two other wounded Gurkhas under the enemy's fire back to the safety of the British lines. For most conspicuous bravery, he was promoted Sergeant and awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in November 1915.
