Sarah was born about 1749/50, the daughter of Rev. John Thomas of Montgomery & Hilltown, PA. Her father devised to her 83 acres in Hopewell Twp., old Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co., NJ. She was the sister of Rev. David Thomas, and the granddaughter of Rev. William Thomas of Wales and Pennsylvania. She joined the Baptist Church of Hopewell in 1778.
