Bertha Tierney was the daughter of Judge Jeremiah Tierney and Mary Ann Loughlin. She married Joseph Francis Steegmuller. They were parents of: Francis Steegmuller, Lawrence Steegmuller,& Joseph Francis Steegmuller, Jr. Their first born son Francis Steegmuller was a noted author who wrote under the pseudonym's Byron Steel, and David Keith as well as in his own name. He was an American biographer, translator and fiction writer, who was known chiefly as a Flaubert scholar. Bertha & Joseph's youngest son died as an infant. Bertha and husband Joseph Steegmuller are at rest in St. Mary's Cemetery with her brother and his family.
