Lela Pearl Reynolds, age 93, of Backus, died Sunday, June 19 at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center in Pine River.

She was born to James Wilson Tilbury and Josephine Brody Tilbury, October 15, 1911, near Fourpoint Lake by Backus. She attended the Lowe School in rural Backus through eighth grade. Her pals to attend high school at Backus were foiled when it became necessary for her to work to help support her siblings. At that time she worked for Pat and Maggie Smith at their home and store in Ponto Lake Township. She was later employed by the H. C. Cummins family in Chicago from 1930-33 and in later years worked for them at their summer home on Horseshoe Lake near Backus.

She married Ernest Lee Reynolds on August 19, 1933 at the Lowe farm on Sylvan Lake near Backus. They first met when he was driving the horse-drawn school bus that she rode while attending the Lowe School. The Lowe schoolhouse later became their home for nearly 69 years.

She was one of the original members of the Backus Church of the Nazarene. She as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, always striving to meet the needs of those around here. She loved quilting and was an avid gardener, sharing her bounty with friends and family. She and her husband were foster parents for many years.

Survivors include a son, Donald (Jean) Reynolds of Backus; a daughter, Donna (Tom) Holden of Backus; a foster son, Daniel Mitchell of Backus, a foster daughter, Mitzi Hanson of Laporte; three grandchildren, a step-grandchild; five foster grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and five foster great-grandchildren; two sisters, Violet Anderson, Pine River, Erma Forseen, Eveleth, and a brother, Roy Tilbury, Backus.

Her parents, husband, and two brothers, Verl William Tilbury and James Silas Tilbury, died earlier.

Services were June 25 at the Church of the Nazarene, Backus with Pastor Melvin Patrick officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Backus.

Arrangements were with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.
