Vera was born in Wilmington on December 6, 1912, daughter of the late Benedetto and Alfonsina (Colucci) Panella. She was employed with Bancroft Mills, and later with the Bell Telephone Company, retiring after 25 years of service. A faithful member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, she was a member of the Parish Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality and a volunteer at the annual Italian Festival. Vera was known for her delicious cooking, and her home was filled with family after Sunday Mass.
Her husband of 50 years, Rocco Toto, passed away on February 13, 1987. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Jim Cole; and her siblings, Victoria Cambi, Gerald Panella, Gilda Tavani, Emily Lambise, Corlinda Maggitti, Edith Mangini, Hilda Dellose and Frances Cutrona.
Vera is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Cole; her son, Francis Toto; her grandchildren, Jeff Cole and wife, Linda, and Denise Kowal and husband, Vince; her great grandchildren, Caitlin and Colin Hartzel, Nicole, Shannon and Benjamin Kowal; and her brother, Benjamin Panella and wife, Mary.
The family would like to thank the staff of Kentmere Nursing Center for the loving care given to Vera.
Family and friends are invited to visit at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 9th and DuPont Streets, Wilmington on Thursday, December 10 from 9:30-10:45AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM. Entombment will follow in the St. Theresa Garden Crypt, Cathedral Cemetery.
