UNITY -- Daniel A. Toto Sr. of Unity passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville, with his wife by his side.

Daniel, oldest son of Vito A. and Dorothy (DiRaimo) Toto, was born in Johnston, R.I., on Jan. 8, 1932. He was a graduate of Gorton High School, class of 1950, enlisted in the Navy in 1951 and served four years aboard the USS Tarawa CVA-40. He was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island, class of 1960, receiving a bachelor's degree in vocational education.

He married the love of his life, Patricia A. Walsh on Aug. 24, 1957, in Carolina, R.I. In the winter of 1960 they moved to Maine in order to accept a teaching position with Unity High School, now part of MSAD 3. He taught vocational agriculture at Unity High School and then at Mount View High School, until his retirement in 1985.

During his retirement he served his community as a founding trustee of the Unity Utilities District, Unity Scholarship Committee and the Unity Cemetery Committee. He also was active in the USS Tarawa CVA-40 Veterans Association; the Bourque-Lanigan Post No. 5 of Waterville; the Vacationland Volkswagen Association; and restored his own VW camper bus. He was also an amateur radio operator using the letters KA1AKS.

He was an avid gardener, fisherman, and Red Sox fan, and enjoyed reading and learning as much as he could concerning history, especially the Civil War era. To his friends and neighbors he was a "jack of all trades."

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Unity; his children, Daniel A. Toto Jr. of Vassalboro, Christopher J.
