Margaretta "Gretchen" (Totten) Deringer died peacefully on the evening of Dec. 26, 2011 at Addison Gilbert Hospital, Gloucester, Mass. with family by her side.
She was born in Manlius, N.Y. on March 23, 1916 to J. Ray and Helen S. Totten. Her family moved to Sherrill, N.Y. where she graduated from Sherrill High School and worked for Oneida Ltd. Silversmiths before she was married. She married Albert B. Deringer on Sept. 19, 1940 and they continued to live in Sherrill for 35 years. She owned Deringer's Barn, an antique and gift shop, until they retired to Pinehurst, N.C. in 1975. In Pinehurst, Gretchen volunteered at the Sandhills Women's Exchange and The Tufts Archive.
Gretchen is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Dennis F. Regan of Southern Pines, N.C. and Marty and Bruce E. Holdridge of Rockport, Mass.; five grandchildren, Dennis F. Regan and his wife, Shelia of Southern Pines, N.C., Jennifer R. Bettiol and her husband, Daniel of College Station Texas, Brae S. Holdridge of Los Angeles, Calif., Creign T. Holdridge of Boston, Mass., and Sadie D. Holdridge of Boston, Mass. and four great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Travis Bettiol and Ryan and Tess Regan. She is also survived by two brothers and their wives, Fred and Janet Totten of Gouverneur, N.Y. and Ray and Donna Totten of Kouts, Ind., many nieces and nephews and a dear friend, Virginia Miller of Sherrill, N.Y. She was predeceased by her husband; her brothers, Joseph and Robert and her sisters, Louise and Helen.
A Funeral Service will be held in Gethsemane Episcopal Church, 320 Park St., Sherrill, NY, on Friday, Dec. 30, at 1:30 p.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. The burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Oneida, NY. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Givens Memorial Library, 150 Cherokee Road, P.O. Box 159, Pinehurst, North Carolina 28370. Attn: Audrey Moriarty. Arrangements in New York are by the Malecki Funeral Home, Sherrill, NY. Gloucester arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, Gloucester, Mass.
