MONTICELLO, Iowa -- Melvin Tucker, 84, of Monticello, died Thursday afternoon, June 26, 2008, at Stone Hill Care Center, Dubuque, following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 30, at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in the Cascade Cemetery.
He was born on March 7, 1924, in Taylor Township, Dubuque County, near Placid, son of Edward and Anna Tucker. Melvin received his education in the rural schools near his home.
He farmed with his parents and his sister, Dorothy, near Epworth, Cascade, and Worthington.
In 1965, he and Dorothy purchased a farm in Castle Grove Township, Jones County, Iowa, near Monticello. Melvin retired from farming in 1974, and moved to Monticello. He then worked as a driver for Swiss Valley Ag Service for a number of years. Melvin had been a resident of Stone Hill Care Center since October 2006.
Melvin enjoyed Cubs baseball, and playing euchre at Lou's, the Showroom and Canton. He also enjoyed Sunday visits with family and friends. He never missed a day or event at the Jones County Fair.
Surviving are a sister, Luella Sternhagen, of Hopkinton; two brothers, Eldon (Inez) and Kenneth, both of Hopkinton; a sister-in-law, Doris Tucker, of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elmer and Joseph; three sisters, Viola Whitfield Moriarity, Grace Sternhagen-Miller and Dorothy Tucker; two sisters-in-law, Vivian and Virginia Tucker; and five brothers-in-law, John Moriarity, Frank Miller, William and Leo Sternhagen, and Joe Whitfield.
