Ruby L. Tucker Brown, 90, of Akron, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Wednesday morning, Dec. 14, 2005, at Village Senior Apartments in Akron.

Services were held at First Baptist Church in Akron, with the Rev. Steven Miller officiating.

Ruby Lorene Tucker Brown was born Aug. 6, 1915, on the family farm near Akron, the daughter of W.P. and Cora (Frager) Tucker. She attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School in 1931 at the age of 15. She attended Westmar College in Le Mars, and later took classes at the University of South Dakota. She taught school in rural Plymouth and Union (S.D.) counties and at Westfield Public School.

She married Armand Brown in 1937. They operated the Adaville store for eight years, from 1945 to 1954, until she returned to teaching. They divorced in 1959. She went to work at Akron Savings Bank in 1966, and remained there until she retired in 1980.

She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Akron, where she served as Sunday school treasurer, Sunday school teacher and deaconess. She was the current president of the American Baptist Women. She was a member of the Vesper Chapter 70 Order of the Eastern Star of Le Mars and a former Worthy Matron. She was a former member of the Older Iowans Legislature, the Book and Thimble Club, and the Akron Senior Citizen Center governing board. She enjoyed playing in the Akron Care Center Bell Choir. Ruby was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to music. She liked to sew and bake, especially pies. She also enjoyed yard work and tending to her flowers while she was able to do it. But most of all, she enjoyed her family and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two children, Larry Brown and his wife, Rose of Omaha, Neb., and Marcene Heeren and her husband, Eldon of Akron; five grandchildren, Lori Heeren of Las Vegas, Nev., Doug Heeren of Akron, Krista Heeren-Graber of Freeman, S.D., Holly Brown of Pomona, Calif., and Steve Brown of McHenry, Ill; nine great-grandchildren, Riley and Dane of Las Vegas, Jordan, Lauren and Alec of Akron, Lea and Cole of Freeman, and Adam and Ashley of McHenry; a brother, Ellis Tucker of Akron; a sister, Virginia Swift and her husband, Barney of Akron; a brother-in-law, Arden Brown of Akron; and a sister-in-law, Jean Tucker of Warner Robins, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Grace Blankenburg and Dorothy Brown; three brothers, Emery Tucker, Robert Tucker and Everett Tucker in childhood; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Grant and Viola Brown.

Pallbearers will be Bob Brown, Rich Brown, Stewart Graber, Doug Heeren, Riley Snyder, Gary Tucker and Steven Brown.
